Willington, DE - The city of Willington, Delaware, has approved funding to equip the police department-wide body cameras.
The Council recently approved $400,000 to employ a new police sergeant and three patrol officers to oversee the new program, The News Journal reported. The new spending marks Wilmington's monetary commitment to funding new body cameras since the department started testing various systems around five years ago.
Citizen groups have called for body cameras to mend trust between the police department and citizens. Still, the program had been stalled in recent years over funding concerns.
Still in works is the city's federal grant application witch if accepted. It would provide $542K towards the camera system's purchase. If the grant is not approved, the city would have to introduce a budget amendment to fund the cameras
