PHILADELPHIA, PA- As a die-hard Eagles fan, I've been following the free agency buzz surrounding Justin Simmons with a mix of excitement and skepticism. While the thought of adding a proven veteran safety to our secondary is enticing, I'm starting to think it's more of a pipe dream than a reality.
Simmons is undoubtedly a talented player, with a stellar resume that includes multiple Pro Bowl nods and All-Pro selections. But, let's face it, he's not getting any younger. At 30 years old, he's past his prime, and the Eagles might be hesitant to invest a hefty contract in a player who may not have many peak years left.
The Broncos' decision to release Simmons in March was a bit of a shocker, but it clearly indicates their desire to rebuild under new head coach Sean Payton. It also freed up a significant chunk of cap space, but it doesn't necessarily mean Simmons is a bargain bin pickup.
While the Eagles do need a veteran safety, especially with Sydney Brown sidelined for a while, their interest in Simmons seems lukewarm at best. Perhaps they're exploring other options, or maybe they're not convinced he's the right fit for their defense.
All things considered, I'm not holding my breath for Simmons to land in Philly. It seems like both sides are moving on, leaving Simmons' future destination a mystery for now. While I respect his talent and contributions to the league, I believe the Eagles are likely to pursue other avenues to bolster their secondary.
