PHILADELPHIA, PA - Get ready, Philadelphia! Levain Bakery, the New York City institution known for its massive, gooey cookies, is finally opening its doors in the City of Brotherly Love. Located in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, the new bakery will serve its signature six-ounce cookies and a selection of pastries, loaves of bread, and coffee starting October 11th, 2024.
But this isn't just any bakery opening. Levain is committed to being a good neighbor and is kicking things off with a day of giving back. All proceeds from opening day will be donated to Broad Street Love, a local organization dedicated to combating poverty in Philadelphia.
From Triathlon Fuel to National Sensation
Founded in 1995 by Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, Levain Bakery began as a small bread shop on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The two avid athletes' friends sought the perfect post-workout treat and started experimenting with cookie recipes. Their now-famous chocolate chip walnut cookie, with its crispy edges and soft, gooey center, quickly became a local favorite and eventually a national sensation, garnering praise from publications like Bon Appetit, The New York Times, and Travel + Leisure.
A Sweet New Space
The Rittenhouse location, housed in a former bank building on Walnut Street, retains some original architectural details, creating a unique and charming atmosphere. A custom mural by Philadelphia artist Tara Jacoby adds a local touch, depicting iconic city landmarks alongside – what else? – cookies!
"We aim to be a true neighbor and community member with each new bakery. We love Rittenhouse and are delighted the bakery is in the heart of Philadelphia," said Weekes and McDonald. "Rittenhouse has no shortage of delicious bakeries; we couldn't be more excited to break bread…and cookies with our new neighbors."
More Than Just Cookies
While the cookies are undoubtedly the show's star, Levain Rittenhouse will also offer a tempting array of other treats. Think loaf cakes, pastries, brioche, and – on weekends – sticky buns. And for those who need a caffeine fix with their sugar rush, they'll be serving coffee, too.
Ready to Indulge?
The Rittenhouse opening marks the 15th location for Levain Bakery, with bakeries nationwide. In addition to in-store purchases, Philadelphians can enjoy Levain treats delivered right to their door through DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. The bakery will also offer catering services and Philadelphia-specific merchandise.
So mark your calendars for October 11th and get ready to experience the Levain magic. Just be prepared to wait in line – these cookies are worth it!
