Philadelphia - On October 5, 2023, Google Play Movies TV will no longer be accessible via Android TV devices; however, movie purchases or rentals may still be made directly via Shop tab on your TV device.

Google is making steps to reduce its number of standalone apps and integrate their functionality more seamlessly into existing products, like Assistant. Recently, its dedicated Music and Books apps were integrated into it; while last summer saw Roku devices no longer using Google Play Movies; instead content can now be streamed directly via YouTube on such devices.

Google Play Movies & TV will continue to be accessible via Android and iOS mobile apps, and any media purchased through it will remain linked with your Google Account and available for streaming on other Google-owned apps such as YouTube; family sharing will remain intact, and refund requests won't change either.

Google announced they are updating Android TV to offer an immersive banner showcasing your recently watched titles in the Shop tab, while providing an easier way to locate existing purchases (and active rentals) through Purchases section which now displays your movies and shows by their purchase date, with the most recently purchased at the top (instead of alphabetically).
