PHIADLEPHIA - Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week by the NBA. This is the third time Embiid has received this honor this season and the 14th time in his career. He is the second player in franchise history to achieve this feat, behind Allen Iverson, who received the award 20 times.
During the week, Embiid led the league by averaging 37.8 points on 54.5 percent shooting, 8.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocked shots. He was one of two players to average at least 35.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists during this period. Embiid's 151 points scored were also the highest among all players.
Embiid's impressive week included back-to-back 40-point performances against the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets, bringing his total to eight 40-point games this season. He also set a new record with his 17th consecutive 30-point double-double, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Embiid also placed seventh on the franchise scoring list with over 11,700 career points.
With his outstanding performance, Embiid continues to make a strong case for the MVP title, averaging 35.0 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 5.9 assists over 31 games this season. Only Chamberlain in the 1963-64 season has achieved similar numbers. In the Western Conference, Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns was named Player of the Week.
