Philadelphia, PA – After 11 years of successful stewardship, Michael Harris has announced his intention to step down as the Executive Director of the South Street Headhouse District (SSHD). Harris will remain in his role during the transition while the Board begins a public search for a new Executive Director.
Throughout his tenure, Harris has championed economic development programs that support new and existing businesses, cleaning and maintenance tactics that supplement city services, public safety initiatives geared towards enlivening nightlife corridors, beautification, and public art projects, as well as a thriving calendar of events, activities, and family-friendly programming.
His accomplishments include establishing SSHD’s Spring Festival (now called South Street Fest), redesigning Headhouse Plaza, and transforming an underutilized parking lot into an accessible public space outfitted with trees, lighting, activation spaces, and ADA-friendly urban design for nearby residents. He also opened the South Street Off Center located at 407 South Street as an on-street visitors center, museum, and office space; re-lighting and upgraded 127 pedestrian lights on South Street from Front to 11th Streets; adding 40 new pedestrian lights on 4th Street / Fabric Row from Lombard to Christian Streets; and founding the Philadelphia BID Alliance—a citywide collaboration between 16 organizations focused on long-term economic development and public service.

In operation for 30 years, the South Street Headhouse District continues to serve and support business and property owners, residents, and visitors by facilitating and maintaining a safe, vibrant, and historic commercial corridor. Earlier this year, launched their incredibly well-received Meet Me On South Street event series that highlights everything South Street offers, from farmers markets to night markets, block parties to festivals.
