PHILADELPHIA - Last June, Philadelphia City Council announced it had passed two bills that could finally put in place the pieces necessary to build the long-awaited I-95 Capping Project connecting Old City with the Delaware River waterfront. One bill creates a zoning designation for the cap over Interstate 95 and Christopher Columbus Boulevard. The other transfers control of city-owned land for the park to Delaware River Waterfront Corp.
Now after years of delays, it's official: PennDOT Begins Preliminary Construction On New I-95 Cap At Penn's Landing
The project will include an 11.5-acre park stretching between Chestnut and Walnut Streets, over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard from Front Street to the riverfront. It will include a new entrance area with public bathrooms, a "Great Lawn" on the east side, basketball courts beneath the interstate, and 12 multipurpose fields.
Construction on the project will commence this spring, setting it on track for completion by 2026.
PennDOT issued a notice approving Buckley & Company Inc. of Philadelphia to begin work on their $328.9 million project to replace and expand Interstate 95 along the Delaware River waterfront at Penn's Landing. According to the release, this authorization will enable the contractor to create a protected work zone and begin preliminary construction activities within an area extending over and adjacent to the interstate between Market and South streets.
