Philadelphia, PA – May 3, 2024 – Philadelphia Zoo is thrilled to announce a significant addition to its growing family: 11-year-old female western lowland gorilla Patty. Following an extensive journey from her birthplace in Chicago, Patty arrived at the Zoo on an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation. She will join the Zoo's silverback, Motuba, with the hope of creating a future generation of critically endangered western lowland gorillas.

Patty's journey underscores the importance of conservation efforts while offering visitors a chance to connect with this remarkable species

“Patty's arrival is a major step in our ongoing efforts to protect and conserve this incredible species," says Andrew J. Baker, Curator of Primates and Small Mammals. "We have a long history of success with gorilla births and are committed to providing world-class care for Patty as she integrates into our troop. We hope her presence inspires visitors to learn more about gorillas and the threats they face in the wild."

Patty's journey began on October 11, 2013, when she was born at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois. Her early years in a large family troop provided valuable social experience, particularly in helping to care for younger gorillas. This indicates a strong potential for motherhood – a crucial quality for contributing to her species' survival.

Since Patty's arrival, our dedicated keeper team has been working closely with her, ensuring a smooth transition into her new home. Reports indicate she is a confident, intelligent, and adaptable gorilla, making her an ideal addition to our western lowland gorilla troop.

A Cause for Conservation and Celebration

Patty's arrival coincides with the Zoo's recent success in gorilla breeding. Most recently, Philadelphia Zoo welcomed two new gorillas, Amani (now 7 ½ years old) and Ajabu (now 6 ½ years old). These births exemplify the Zoo's commitment to protecting this critically endangered species.

Western lowland gorillas face numerous threats in their native habitats across Central Africa. Habitat loss due to activities like mining and logging, along with the dangers of poaching, pose significant challenges to their survival. Philadelphia Zoo plays a vital role in programs that directly support the conservation and well-being of gorillas.
